Random Thoughts - I Updated My BIOS!!!
Hello again, we’re in yet another heatwave, Keir Starmer has just resigned and Andy Burnham is being sworn in as an MP right as I type these words!
Anyway BIG news regarding my PC. A couple of weeks ago I was watching a livestream on YouTube, browsing X/Threads, the usual when my PC blackscreened. This was the first time this has ever happened and this followed the tab crashes I was having in Chrome.
I had been preparing for updating my PC’s Windows and BIOS, I had the latest firmware on a USB stick, but I was too scared to update it in case I bricked my motherboard. Also, World of Warcraft has been nagging me to update too. I finally snapped, I thought “screw this!”, I rebooted the PC, went into the UEFI/BIOS - whatever you call it these days and I plugged in the USB stick and just hit update.
I just left the PC alone, I didn’t touch the keyboard or mouse at all, I walked out my room and accepted whatever fate lay ahead. At one point it appeared if it had frozen, but I remained calm and didn’t touch it and sure enough after 6 or so minutes the update completed successfully! I am now on BIOS version 1836 (April 2026)!
I think I have saved my computer from certain death. I am running a 14th gen Intel i9 CPU, these processors have been cursed with instability issues relating to the amount of voltage supplied to the chip. In other words, these CPUs have slowly been frying themselves to death. The solution is to install the latest BIOS firmware which addresses the over-voltage issues, although this doesn’t help CPUs that have already been fried.
I should have done this months ago, as soon as I saw those warnings in the WoW launcher, but apart from that blackscreen I have had no problems with this PC so far (except for the problems with Chrome which are now fixed). I still have an issue with DaVinci Resolve freezing, but pressing Win + Ctrl + Shift + B seems to fix this issue thankfully, I need DaVinci Resolve, I can’t make videos without it!
Lesson learned. Just don’t buy a 13th or 14th gen Intel CPU, next time I get a PC I am going AMD. I just hope this PC lasts a few years more yet.
A few weeks ago I had my second colonoscopy, I have IBS and several other problems with my gut including acid reflux, Barrett’s Oesophagus and a hiatus hernia. I had some biopsies taken so was a bit sore afterwards. I hate having to prepare for it, I had to drink a disgustingly sweet drink and wasn’t allowed to eat anything the day prior to the procedure.
I really want to record more videos, not just WoW, but I really want to start FTB series 2, I know I say this every post, but I am definitely going to start soon. I am also looking forward to playing and recording Grim Dawn: Fangs of Asterkarn on the 23rd of July.
Speaking of videos, I have also been working on a list of ideas of stuff I could do on my new channel, I’m going to be doing a lot of programming and web dev for now, but in the future I hope to be doing some photography vlogs and maybe PC/hardware unboxings and builds/upgrades.
I haven’t yet settled on a name for my ‘second channel’ (actually my 4th if you count my livestream channel). I want to make a nice banner image for it and an avatar, I am debating whether to make the channel on my main account or my alt account.
My gaming channel is in need of a spruce-up, too. Think I might change the avatar and banner. I was also thinking of adding a different end screen to my videos, maybe across all three channels, I don’t know.
Right, I’m going to get this post uploaded, enjoy the rest of this cup of tea then play some Grim Dawn or Minecraft I think. It’s too hot to record WoW, luckily I have a big backlog of videos, so I’m good til September I think. It’s going to be 34° on Wednesday, 40 in some parts of the country, horrible.
Been watching Keir Starmer’s resignation coverage on BBC News all day, looks like Andy Burnham, ex mayor of Greater Manchester will take his job. Ridiculous how many PMs we’ve had lately.
